Afrikania brings drums & dances of Africa
The Afrikania troupe parades to the bandstand.

Lake Forest College throbbed to the drums of Africa April 11, as Afrikania South Ketu Traditional Culture Troupe of Ghana, West Africa had a crowd of more than 50 people moving to the beat in the Mohr Student Center.

The troupe features a rhythm band playing traditional African instruments, and the program featured the dances of tribes from Ghana, Togo and Benin.

Program Coordinator Erin Mink Garvey said that this is the fourth time the troupe has played the college. Prof. Midawo Gideon Foli Alorwoyie, the troupe's leader and founder, said he recalled playing the Mohr Center when it opened in 2006. Alorwoyie is internationally acclaimed as the Chief Master Drummer of Ghana.

Earlier in the evening, Alorwoyie taught a workshop, showing a class of 14 some of the most basic traditional dance steps.
