The Orphanage — made by first-time Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona and produced by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) — works on two levels. As a drama, it is a somber and gripping portrayal of grief, of the vast difficulties facing a parent who loses a child. As a horror film, it slowly creates a sense of anxiety and fear, palpable from the very first beautiful, evocative shot. This is not a film that relies on sudden shocks (although there are a few of those as well), but it is a deeply frightening and emotionally charged experience.
Jaimie Russell of the BBC calls the film “haunting and heartbreaking.”
