Made on a micro-budget, Once may look like a documentary, but do not be fooled; it is one of the best musicals in recent memory and one of the best films of last year. The film — Oscar winner for “Best Song” — follows the growing relationship between an Irish street singer and a young woman who also a musician, documenting with subtlety, warmth and restraint the complexity of the feelings between these two people and the music that connects them.
Claudia Puig of USA Today says, “Once is a film for anyone who has ever been transported by the power and passion of music,” and Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly states that “the movie swoons, and you will too.”
