Across Lake County, thousands of red tulips are blooming in “tobacco-free” gardens. The bulbs were planted as part of “Plant a Promise,” an event held last October during Red Ribbon Week, a national drug prevention awareness week. Hundreds of youth planted the bulbs to celebrate those who have chosen to be tobacco free and to honor those whose lives have been touched by a tobacco-related disease.
Combined with tulips planted for the same event in previous years, Lake County residents can enjoy the site of over 28,000 red tulips at over 175 different locations, including schools and community locations, such as libraries, churches, and town halls. The tulips are a great visual reminder of the positive choices that Illinois residents and youth are making. According to recent data, nine out of 10 Lake County teens choose not to smoke (2006 Illinois Youth Survey) and 88 percent of Lake County residents do not smoke (2006 Illinois Behavioral Risk Survey).
Every day in Illinois alone, eight people die from exposure to secondhand smoke, and 50 people die from their own tobacco use. The good news is that on January 1st, 2008 the State of Illinois went smoke free, making all indoor public places and workplaces smoke free.
