Older adults set out on road to wellness

North Shore Senior Center members Royce Masterson (right), of Glenview, and Barbara Schmitz, of Wilmette, flex their considerable muscles to show that all it takes to remain healthy and fit is a little dedication.

From the North Shore Senior Center:

Despite our fast food diets and increasingly sedentary lifestyles, Americans hold fitness in high esteem. And while advertising for health clubs, weight loss programs and vitamin supplements is abundant, one demographic seems to be left out of the pitch: people over age 50.

However, there is a program that celebrates mature adults and their commitment to wellness. It’s called National Senior Health and Fitness Day, and it will be observed all across the country on Wednesday, May 28, 2008. As part of this event, more than 1,000 local organizations will host a variety of health and fitness related activities based on the interests of community residents. Their goal is a simple one: to help keep American adults on the path to lifelong wellness.

North Shore Senior Center in Northfield will serve as one of the official sites for National Senior Health and Fitness Day. The NSSC’s program will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include Recreational Fitness Activities; Strength and Balance Programs; Health and Wellness Presentations; Line-Dancing Programs; Outdoor Fitness Walks with REI; Exhibitors and Vendors; and complimentary healthy snacks. Admission is free and open to the public.

Though it will receive extra emphasis on May 28, exercise and good health get their due all year round at North Shore Senior Center. The NSSC campus features a state-of-the-art Fitness Center equipped with treadmills, cross-trainers, stationary bicycles, Nautilus strength-training equipment, free weights, balance boards, resistance bands and more.

NSSC member Barbara Schmitz, of Wilmette, is a familiar face at the Fitness Center, where she stops in several times each week to log in a couple of miles on the treadmill. Schmitz acknowledges that exercise makes her sleep better and feel better overall.

“Running has been an integral part of my life for the past 40 years,” she explains. “Now, it’s mostly fast walking at the North Shore Senior Center -- I can’t imagine what I would do without it.”

Another NSSC member, Royce Masterson, of Glenview, credits his visits to the Fitness Center with giving him more energy and helping him fend off illnesses and colds.

“I go there four to five times a week, and most of the time I use the rowing machine,” Masterson says. “I also do ellipticals and some treadmill and at least once a week, I use the Nautilus equipment. It really makes me feel good.”
