Sara McIntosh

As a highly regarded hypnotherapist, Sara McIntosh draws upon a lifetime of serving others.

Over the past 34 years, she has handcrafted thousands of pairs of shoes as a custom shoemaker. Through that experience, McIntosh knows better than most anyone else that one size doesn’t fit all—not with feet, and certainly not with our minds.

That same truth holds true in her work as a hypnotherapist, through which she has helped hundreds of people seeking to better their lives in various ways—often to lose weight or quit smoking.

“I’ve always been fascinated with the mind and how it controls our lives, and I love helping people,” said McIntosh. “The field of Hypnotherapy offers transformation which allows people to move more rapidly toward their goals.”

On Tuesday, Aug. 5, McIntosh will be leading “Manage Your Mind, Manage Your Weight,” a free introductory group session in Oak Park geared toward helping people who are seeking to lose weight.

Among other topics, she will discuss how attitude and subconscious blocks play a significant role in sabotaging weight-loss efforts.

She will be speaking at Relaxation Plantation, 715 Lake St., Suite 706, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tyler Wellness is sponsoring the program of five sessions, which includes this free session. More information is available at www.tylerwellness.com or by calling 800-695-5410.

The program’s goals include helping people adjust their relationships with food and forming new eating habits, such as diminishing cravings.

Before moving to Chicago in June 2007, McIntosh spent the previous decade in Santa Fe, New Mexico. While there, she obtained a degree in clinical hypnotherapy from the American Academy of Hypnotherapy. She is also certified with the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners.

While in Santa Fe, she interned and apprenticed with Peter Michaelson, a psychologist and author of Freedom From Self Sabotage.

“I love this work, and I’m committed to helping people achieve their goals,” said McIntosh.

After the Aug. 5 session at Relaxation Plantation, there will be a two-week break before the next four fee-based sessions on Aug. 19, Aug. 26, Sept. 2 and Sept. 9, all from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Sara McIntosh On The Myths & Realities of Hypnosis

If you've ever seen hypnotism used as entertainment in a stage act, you've probably witnessed several of the myths about hypnosis in action.

Legitimate clinical hypnotherapy practiced by a qualified professional is not the same process as that performed on stage.

Myth: When you're in hypnosis, you surrender your free will.

Reality: Hypnosis is a heightened state of concentration and focused attention. When you're in hypnosis, you don't lose your personality, your free will or your personal strength.

“People will not do anything that is against their ethical code,” said McIntosh.

Myth: When you're in hypnosis, the hypnotherapist controls you.

Reality: You allow hypnosis voluntarily for your own benefit. A hypnotherapist only serves as a knowledgeable guide or facilitator.

Myth: In hypnosis, you lose consciousness and have amnesia.

Reality: A small number of people—less than one half of 1 percent—who go into a very deep hypnotic state experience amnesia. However, most people remember everything that occurs in hypnosis.

Myth: You can be hypnotized without your consent.
Reality: Successful hypnosis depends on your willingness to experience it. You can allow it or not; it’s up to you.
