Lake County Haven opens doors for anniversary
Cindy Harger, Executive Director of Lake County Haven, gives a tour of the house.

The typical images one associates with the term "homeless shelter" are far from the truth found at Lake County Haven.

Lake County Haven is dedicated to offering support to homeless women and their families so that they may achieve permanent independent living. The Libertyville-based nonprofit organization celebrated its 15th anniversary April 18 with an open house at its main facility, which looks like a typical house on a typical Midwestern street.

"What shocks people the most is its very much like a home," said Executive Director Cindy Harger. "In many cases, these women haven't ever had an environment like this."

Harger was on hand to introduce staff and give tours of the Haven, which houses 10 clients at a time. The organization also offers transitional housing outside the shelter, educational services, counseling, and other support.

Also at the open house was a 2008 BMW Z4 that is the grand prize in the raffle at the Havem Gala Benefit May 3.
